My First List

Although I am still a novice blogger, I've noticed a considerable amount of lists. I gotta do my first list about something I know. Something I spend a lot of time with. Something that has resulted in my hand-eye coordination being second-to-none and my social life being last-to-nobody. That's right....video games. Now, I'm really gonna have to exclude Gamecube, since I don't own one and haven't really played enough on it to know what games are great. Also, I didn't want to overwhelm this list with Mario-type games (Just trying to limit the franchises). I didn't really include arcade titles either and my selections have to do with fun, originality, and the era in which they came out. That being said, I present my top 20 games:

20: River Raid (Atari)-As basic as it gets, and fun as hell. There's really no ending, but you play for points. My dad and I would play this, and we would use the higher point total for bragging rights. Of course, he mercilessly destroyed me most of the time.

19: Mega Man II (NES)-Much better than the first. Challenging, but not impossible. This is before the Mega Man series ran out of ideas for their villians, so the bosses were still original. Cool game.

18: Tetris (Gameboy)-The addictive Russian import. Much like those delicious tennis chicks.

17: Kirby's Adventure (NES)-Fantastic, cartoonish fun. Like Mega Man, you can take the powers of your enemies. However, Kirby can take the traits of basic enemies. If you've never played it, it is an emulator must have!

16: Midnight Magic (Atari)-The daddy of pinball video games. Another gem not many people may know about. It's slow by today's standards, but deserves the list because it's an original.

15: Golden Axe (Genesis)-Choose your skantily clad, Conan-esque warrior and enter the fray. Simple, mindless fun.

14: Super Mario World (SNES)-The SNES's launch title changed Mario as we know him. At its time, it was amazing. We all know this.

13: Devil May Cry (PS2)-I see that a multitude of rip-offs have either been made or are being developed. This is still probably the smoothest, quickest game I've played on PS2. I also like the hero because he's not your typical, chivalrous pussy. He's kind of a cocky asshole. I can relate. Plus, you get unlimited ammo to slay baddies. You can't beat that.

12: Super Metroid (SNES)-Much better than the original. When this came out, it was awe-inspiring for me. Big guns and bigger enemies.

11: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES)-After all these years, and this is STILL the best damn boxing game ever. King Hippo is the shit!

10: The Madden series since 2001 (PS2)-I never really played these before 2001, but I've been hooked since. I also love just when you think the series can't improve any more, somehow it always does the next year.

9: NBA Live 2004 (PS2)-I've spent countless hours playing by myself (and with myself for that matter). However, the online play is better. Me, Tim, Hoosh, and Clint will attest to that. I just hope 2005 is better.

8: WWF No Mercy (N64)-The best wrestling game I've played. Lots of guys to pick, both from start and hidden. Plus, they have an endless array of moves to use for the Create-a-Wrestler mode.

7: Halo (XBOX)-An awesome one-player game, but even better playing against others in the multi-player mode. I can't wait for Halo 2 later this year. Only then will I know my XBOX purchase was well worth it.

6: Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)-A good, strategic fighter. It's been surpassed now, but a lot of my choosing this has to do with how SF II revolutionized fighting games. I put the Turbo edition on the list since it allowed you to choose game speed and the bosses from the first game.

5: Final Fantasy X (PS2)-I spent far too much time with this one. Time I'll never get back. I felt it was a life's ambition to complete all the side quests on this one. This game helped me to realize how pathetic I am.

4: Mario RPG (SNES)-Two RPG's in a row. This was just the funnest shit in the world to me. The battles were much more involved than even RPG games of today. Plus, where else are you gonna see Mario and Bowser on the same side.

3: Goldeneye (N64)-First-person shooters still want to be this game. Problem is, they won't be. I'd love to see how this game fairs in today's online-gaming world. The split-screen mulitplayer was bad-ass enough as it is.

2: Legend of Zelda (NES)-With all the digital animation and 3-D environments in today's games, has gaming really came that far? NO! Zelda is still the best adventure game ever. Best game ever! Wait...second best...

1: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS)-The only regular PS entry on my list is the best game I've ever played. If you took the best RPG you've ever played, Metroid, and Castlevania and forced those items to fornicate, it would beget this game. Nothing's better. Awesome foes, endless weapons and items, and plenty of hidden treats make this the best game I've ever played.

Well, that's my list. As with all lists, it's open to debate (except for #1...it's just too good). I just hope no girls see my site to witness this. My social skills with the ladies suck enough as it is. Later!
